Penn Mobile iOS - Laundry
Penn Mobile is the official application for the University of Pennsylvania, developed by an organization called Penn Labs. Penn Labs is a student-run group that makes stuff for the student body, like Penn Course Review and Penn Mobile. This fall, me and a few others designed a laundry screen for Penn Mobile, which allows students to see what washers and dryers are available in any college house on campus. This is a super useful feature - in many of the high rise dorms, there are only a few machines on each floor, so finding a room with open machines means lots and lots of stairs. This app eliminates that annoyance, and makes everyone's lives just a little bit easier.
My role in the development was mostly front-end. Working with designer Laura Gao, I designed and implemented the user interface using Sketch and Swift 4. I also made these cool laundry icons, which I'm still pretty chuffed about:
This design process was really educational for me. It was my first time collaborating with a group of developers, and it was my first time designing something with another person. I learned lots (!) about merge conflicts, programmatic styles of development (no storyboards in Penn Labs), and efficient methods of design. We actually changed designs a few different times through the development cycle, and ended up back on the very first one we came up with. That says a lot about our design process, and it's something I want to improve in the future. Overall, though, it was a great experience and I'm looking forward to making many more projects with Penn Labs.
